What we do
Nationwide Electrician is an advertising and referral service. We maintain a coverage map of 18,671 US ZIP codes across 10,655 cities in 47 states, publish guides explaining what electrical work involves and what it costs, and route enquiries to licensed electrical contractors working in the relevant area.
That means one phone number covers 20 service categories — from a dead outlet to a 400-amp service upgrade — without you having to research five local companies first.
How this service is funded
Contractors pay us for referrals. You do not pay us anything, and there is no charge for calling or for receiving a quote. That business model has an obvious consequence, and it is worth stating plainly: we are paid when a call is transferred to a participating contractor, not when you hire one.
What that does not change is the work itself. The contract, the price, the warranty and the quality of the installation are between you and the licensed contractor you choose. If a quote does not feel right, you are free to walk away — there is no obligation created by the call.
What we are not
- We are not an electrical contractor and we do not perform electrical work.
- We do not employ the electricians who call you.
- We do not set, negotiate or guarantee the prices contractors charge.
- We do not perform inspections or issue permits — those are local government functions.
- We do not rank contractors in exchange for payment inside editorial guides.
Where the data comes from
Two sources feed every page on this site. The coverage file lists which ZIP codes have participating licensed contractors and is the reason 18,671 ZIP pages exist here. The geographic layer — city names, counties, coordinates and time zones — comes from the GeoNames postal dataset, published under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.
Pricing comes from published 2026 US market data for residential electrical work, reviewed and summarised as national planning ranges. We update the ranges as the market moves, and every figure is labelled as an estimate rather than a quote. Data last reviewed September 23, 2026.
Editorial standards
The 12 guides in our library exist to answer the questions people ask before they hire anyone: what the job involves, what it should cost, which symptoms are genuinely urgent, and how to check that a contractor is licensed. Where we state a price, it is a range with its assumptions attached. Where practice varies by state or county, we say so rather than pretending there is one national rule.
